Shalom, Isy

Here is a panel from the story that Laura Sanchez and I have been working on for the past few weeks. It is a graphic travel journal of a trip I made to Israel in 1983. We started with some very rough sketches, and Laura has been helping me with pencils, inking, and research. The Hastings High School Senior Alternative Internship presentations are on June 19th. Laura and I are hoping to have our first draft finished by then.

Hi Isy, I need to know more! Those look like roman aqua ducts in the background? Where is Caesaria?
The colors of the landscape sound wonderful; will this graphic travel journal eventually be in color?
I assume that’s you in the shuttle; were you as homesick as you look?

I was hoping someone would want to know more! Yes, that is a Roman aqueduct in the background. Caesaria is on the coastline of Israel. I am hoping to do more in color, but I’m not very good on Photoshop, and my intern is off to Colombia (the country). I wasn’t homesick, just jetlagged, and craning my neck to look at the Roman ruins.

I have a friend who traveled to Israel when she was , I don’t know, maybe 16? She took her daughter there last fall for several months because it had been a life changing experience she didn’t want her daughter to miss. I’m guessing it had a profound impact on you as well? Do you have plans for publishing this travel journal, Isy? ‘Cause I want to read it!

    Isy,

You really do amazing work. Are you planning this as a graphic novel? Something to publish?
I’d love to read it, too.

Marek Bennett, a cartooning friend, has been doing an interesting travel journal about his cartoon interchange with Nicaragua. Here’s a link:

Hi Stephanie and Margaret, Yes, I am hoping to print/publish my Israel story somewhere. I’ll see how it goes…Now that I re-read the story, nothing really dramatic happened, but it did make a big impression. I had always been curious about Israel though, so I guess I could also write a pre-quel…I really liked Marek Bennett’s blog. Thanks for sending it.
